## What is their business and what they solve?
Recruitment agencies make money by helping companies find suitable candidates and help them fill more difficult positions. The fee-s for a service of recruitment agency is usually fixed and between 20 - 25% of candidate’s yearly gross salary.
There are two types of contract usually in recruitment.
1. Retainer - a company will pay some fee in advance for agency to start searching for the desired position and will pay the rest according to the agreement. Usually three installments where second third is paid when the agency presents the shortlist of the candidates and the final payment after the successful placement.
2. Contingency - on the other hand means that an agency is working “for free” at the beginning but has the ownership of the candidates they present. Once the candidate is accepted in the company, the company will pay the full installment to an agency.
Usually there are also guarantees. Usually that means that if the candidate is kicked or leaves in the trial period (usually three months), the agency has to refill the role with other candidate or return part or the full payment.
This is important because your bonuses are tied to the client paying to your agency. In worst case scenario it can happen that you receive a bonus to your paycheck but then might need to return part of it if the clients decides to pursue guarantees after some issues.
## The role of a bizdev in recruitment agencies
**There are usually two types of roles:**
1. Recruitment Consultant - A hybrid role combining recruitment with business development, where consultants are responsible for getting new clients but also for filling the vacancies which means you also do interviews with candidates.
2. BD Manager (no recruitment) - this one is more rare but it means that your agency has other recruiters that will do interviews and deliver candidates and you are responsible to only bring new business.
**Who are your prospects?**
HR people, C-levels (if the company is smaller), Producers or any hiring managers (for programmers it might be Technical Director etc.).
**Is it a difficult business?**
The business itself is quite competitive (many specialized agencies that existed for long years). They built relationship mostly offline and are doing a lot of community initiatives. Also since 2023 there are huge waves of layoffs as the industry is stabilizing after covid’s growth. More than 30k people lost their jobs since then and there are a lot candidates on the market which means that there is less demand for recruitment agencies.
Some of them had to cease their operations and many are just surviving.
**What are the KPI’s?**
Usually it’s how much money you bring to the agency (which means you need to successfully fill the vacancies). It’s mostly focused around monthly/quarterly revenue and so it is very unstable.
**How does your role evolve?**
If you are responsible for new business development only it’s straightforward. Just bring new business in. If you are responsible for recruitment part as well than your role might shift to mostly focusing on delivering candidates and doing a lot of interviews and account management. If you have good clients they can supply you with enough of roles to fulfill your KPI’s without doing any new bizdev.
## Sales cycle and deals
Agencies prefer partnering up with companies for long term and are mostly cooperating with multiple agencies at the same time.
Signing a contract with a company could be relatively quick (especially if contingency) so from the first contact it could be few weeks or in some cases a bit longer.
Once the deal is signed, you start working on positions and it could take another few weeks to successfully place a candidate.
## Salary structure
Usually the base salary is a bit smaller (depending on seniority) but it can easily be from 30 to 50% of your total package). The bonuses are tied to your performance, aka being able to fill positions in certain period of time.
**Example of a bonus** - you receive 10 - 20% of what clients pay to your agency. If a candidate’s salary is 50k USD gross per year, the client pays 20% of this to your agency (10k USD) and you receive between 1k - 2k USD gross as a bonus.
